After hurdling outsourced design firms and co-designers at my dotcom in a competition of sorts to design the new company logo, this project became a personal milestone. Although design by committee is never favorable and rarely successful, this challenge proved fulfilling since my design was able to satisfy my creative director, editor and chief, various marketing and image consultants, CEO and panel from our Venture Capitalists.

With the explosion of digital cameras, online photo sharing and printing became one of the dotcom eras big ideas. Zing.com, wanting to stand out from the myriad of companies out there with futuristic web and technology influenced logos, decided to appeal to our main customer base. Soccer moms. In an attempt to appeal to them a more classic font style and warm earthy colors were chosen. After developing the logo and theme, I was responsible for translating that into our entire collateral system.

During the 2000 Bay to Breakers marathon, Zing was a major sponsor of the race. Being the corporate ID watchdog, I was responsible for much of the branding of prizes and giveaways which included T-shirts, stickers, hats and this disposable camera. The cameras were distributed among Marathon participants and spectators at the beginning of the race and by the end of the day, the cameras were deposited in collection bins and people's photos would be online at Zing.com to view and share.

Skincare salon had several failed attempts at creating a satisfying logo with several different designers. The challenge that their other designers were not able to overcome, was truly understanding that not all clients can express the image and look they have imagined in their minds. What was needed was a blend of translating some of the client's general non-design ideas as well as introducing some examples to help client learn and use some design vocaubulary.
